Janet S. Stopka, DDS, PC - reviews
I’m so glad I found such a great dentist and office! I recommend them to everyone. I love that Dr. Stopka cares more about natural non-toxic methods and that she is so thorough and professional. My husband switched to Dr. Stopka as well and has been much happier with his overall dental care. We also love how friendly the front desk ladies are! Nancy & Nancy K are the best.

There are many situations that can arise in which a patient may require a tooth to be extracted:

  • Impaction
  • Periodontal disease
  • Large cavity
  • Damage/injury

When a patient is faced with tooth extraction, they are educated on the two possible types of extraction – simple and surgical.

  • Simple extraction – Dr. Janet Stopka defines a simple extraction as a dental procedure that is done with local anesthetics. The dentist uses specialized forceps that hold the tooth and wedges it from the bone of the jaw. A simple extraction can only be performed if there is enough of the tooth exposed above the gum line to complete the procedure. However, if there is not, patients may instead need a surgical extraction.
  • Surgical extraction – a surgical extraction is performed when there is not enough of tooth exposed to perform a simple extraction, or if the tooth has not yet erupted through the gum line. It is typically used in situations such as the extraction of the third molars, or “wisdom teeth,” that are often removed early as a preventative measure, or due to pain caused from impaction. Surgical extractions require the dentist to access inside of the gum tissue and the bone to remove the tooth. It is more invasive but is completed with proper sedation and anesthetics for patient comfort.

Are tooth extractions painful?

At the practice of Dr. Janet S. Stopka, it is ensured that patients are comfortable and at ease during their dental appointments. She encourages patients to ask questions about their procedure prior to undergoing them so they have a full understanding of what is being performed when they arrive. Additionally, patients are welcome to ask about the methods of sedation and anesthetics used before and during treatment that can relax them and make them feel at ease for their visit. When patients have a positive experience at the dental office, it can put them at ease and reduce their overall anxiety.

How does the dentist determine a patient requires extraction of a tooth?

Before extracting teeth, patients will have full evaluations to determine if this is the ideal solution for their specific needs. Dr. Janet S. Stopka and her team are here to provide patients with a way of saving the teeth whenever possible. For example, if patients have a large cavity, a filling and the placement of a dental crown may be a solution, depending on how deep the cavity goes. However, there are often situations in which tooth extraction cannot be avoided. This is when our professionals will thoroughly evaluate the patient and then provide them with the viable options available. If an extraction is needed, Dr. Janet S. Stopka will discuss the type of extraction required and walk them through the process so they know what is being performed when they arrive for their appointment.

How are teeth replaced after extraction?

In some situations, patients who have extractions performed will need to consider the advantages of tooth replacement afterwards. Dentures, bridges, and dental implants are all tooth replacement options that are available with Dr. Janet S. Stopka and that may be considered to restore function and appearance of the smile following an extraction procedure.
