Sedation

Dentistry does not have to be stressful when you visit the Burr Ridge dental office of Dr. Janet Stopka!

For millions of people, visits to the dentist are wrought with anxiety. In more than fifteen years of practice, Dr. Stopka has helped thousands of patients enjoy a much more pleasant experience. Our team not only takes the time to get to know you beyond your dental condition, but we provide gentle care in a relaxing atmosphere. One visit at a time, we can change your perception of dentistry.

How sedation helps

Dental sedation has existed for more than a century, and yet this service remains somewhat elusive to those seeking general dental care. Dr. Stopka understands the immense toll that dental fears and anxiety can have on your oral health. In our office, patients may choose to incorporate nitrous oxide into their visits to ease their fears while attending to the health of their smiles.

Nitrous oxide is one of the oldest forms of sedation used in dentistry. This gas sedative has no color and no odor, but has the power to ease both physical and mental tension. Mixed with oxygen, nitrous is a safe and effective medication that can very quickly eliminate anxiety.

Fast acting on the nervous system, this sedative tends to cause feelings of relaxation and wellbeing. It has been called “laughing gas” for this tendency, which can result in “the giggles” in some patients. During care, sedated patients remain alert and capable of communicating with our team. Feelings of anxiety and fear, however, are replaced with calmness.

One of the benefits of nitrous oxide for dental sedation is that we have the ability to adjust the depth of sedation very quickly. This is not possible with other types of sedation due to the speed at which the body responds. Because the effects of inhalation sedation are felt almost immediately, our patients are able to receive the exact dosage they need to feel comfortable.

Also unique to nitrous oxide is the duration of effects. Both oral and IV sedation have lingering effects, while nitrous oxide leaves the body within five minutes after delivery has stopped. The quickness with which the effects of nitrous oxide diminish allows our patients to go about their day without side effects.

Your smile is an important factor in your general health and wellness. Fear does not have to stand in your way of professional care. If you live in the Orland Park or Burr Ridge area, improved dental experiences are within your reach.
